The Sea - March/April 2009
Galapagos Dreams
Make 2009 the year you have a close encounter of the marine kind with The Sea’s wildlife holiday Guide.
Planning a trip to celebrate Darwin’s birthday. Rachel Dex and Ecuador-born Santiago Bejarano offer insider’s tips.
TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TRIP
1. Get a great guide…
Ensure your naturalist guide is at least a category III as determined by the Galapagos National Park. This means they will speak good English and have a good scientific knowledge base, both vitally important if they are to truly bring alive for you the wonder of this remarkable archipelago.
2. ...and a small boat!
The best way to visit the islands is on board a yacht, ideally no bigger than for 16 passengers. Gently sailing between the islands will bring you much closer to nature, and make for a much richer experience than on larger vessels.
3. See the best Islands
Make sure the yacht you choose visits some of the archipelago’s most spectacular islands Espanola (also known as Hood), Genovesa (also known as Tower) and Fernandina.
4. Go at the best time
From mid-April through to mid-June when the sea birds are nesting, or November and December when Giant Tortoises can be seen easily in the wild.
Don’t forget Ecuador
All trips to the Galapagos must start and end here, and its home to some of the planet’s most accessible rainforests as well as a fascinating and colourful Indian culture.
Rachel and Santiago run Think Galapagos, which organises holidays in the Galapagos and Ecuador, including a special 14-day cruise around the islands to celebrate Charles Darwin’s 200th Birthday on April 19-May 7 2009 at £3995 per person excluding international flights.
