Hacienda San Agustin del Callo

Historical rustic splendour and style.

Overview

Setting

At the foot of the snowcapped Cotopaxi Volcano.

Built on the site of an Incan palace, later turned into an Augustinian Convent and also temporary home to the French Geodisic Mission whose visit to Ecuador in 1742 helped helped determine the true shape of the earth, Hacienda San Augustine is steeped in history.

A former home of an Ecuadorean president, this beautiful Hacienda has been fully restored to its former glory. The views of the beautiful snowcapped Cotopaxi volcano are spectacular on a clear day. The communal areas and beautifully syled rooms are characterised by vibrant colours and traditional art and furniture and feature perfectly carved volcanic stone walls from the fifteenth century.

Some History
The Hacienda is one of the two most important archaeological Inca sites in Ecuador, and the point furthest north from Cuzco of Imperial style construction. Famous visitors include Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa who were appointed by the King of Spain to host the Geodesic Mission in 1736, the awesome scientific enterprise organized and led by Charles-Marie de la Condamine; Alexander von Humboldt German scientist and renowned naturalist and explorer and the illustrious English mountain climber Edward Whymper.
