A lovingly restaured house in the centre of Quito which offers great value and is a real oasis of peace in the bustle of the colonial quarter. The standard rooms are compact, but very well designed and beautifully decorated with a real eye for detail. Just one block away from Independence Square, the Presidential Palace, and in walking distance of the main attractions of the old section, this is a charming colonial style hotel with a homely feel and great service.

The staff are very happy to walk guests to one of the selection of excellent restaurants in walking distance of the hotel, and will organise for someone from the restaurant to walk you back.

History
The building that is now El Relicario del Carmen is one of the oldest in the city and was built in 1705. Originally part of a much bigger house, in the eighteenth century the house was subdivided. The famous Mariscal Sucre, leader of Ecuadors War of Independence against Spain, spent many afternoons in the house courting one of the daugthers of house owner at the time Antonio Jijon (though the romance was eventually thwarted!) The house was lovingly renovated over a period of years by the current owners who transformed it into the charming boutique hotel which opened its doors in 2006.

Rooms

18 guest rooms with either king size or twin beds. As a historic construction most rooms have windows to the inside patio, others have very well isolated windows onto the street so virtually no noise creeps in, and others have a beautiful view over rooftops. Each has air conditioning, cable TV, telephone, WiFi, clock radio, small mini-bar, digital safety box and hair dryer.

Rates

Rates range from $94 (approx GB£68) for a single up to $162 (approx GB£115) for the largest of the double rooms including American breakfast and 22% taxes.

Food & drink

American style breakfast is served in a cozy downstairs dining area. Although evening meals are available, though we would recommend taking advantage of one of the excellent restaurants nearby (for example that at the Plaza Grande, so you can take advantage of the views over the Plaza, without paying the price tag for one of their suites!)
