With its sumptious fabrics, fantastic views and intricate hand carved wooden furniture inspired by the Spanish Colonial era, Plaza Grande is Quito’s most luxuriant boutique hotel. Located on one side of Quito’s main square, with impressive views of the Government Palace, the Cathedral and domes of the colonial-era churches the hotel offers unrivalled luxury in a fantastic setting at the heart of Quito’s colonial centre.
Insider Knowledge
The Hotel Plaza Grande is located in what was the home of Juan Diaz de Hidalgo, one of the Spanish conquerors who founded the city of Quito at the beginning of the sixteenth century.
His mansion then went on to become the Majestic Hotel one of Quito’s first hotels, which opened its doors for the first time in 1943 and became famous in Ecuador for its elegance, music and colour.
The hotel closed its doors and the building went on to be a bank and later municipal offices before being bought in 2005 by a group of hoteliers who also operate the Swissotel in Qutio, who restaured it to its former glory.

The hotel’s French inspired restaurant ‘La Belle Epoque’ boasts the most stunning views of any restaurant in Quito’s old town as well as great food and an extensive wine list with live Opera every evening fro Wednesday through Sunday. The hotel also has El Claustro, which showcases the best of the world’s most celebrated vineyards in a setting inspired by the great wine cellars of Spain. The ‘Café Plaza Grande’ serves the best of traditional Ecuadorean food from across the country.
Also
To take advantage of the hotel’s great location, we recommend the Plaza View suites all of which have a balcony looking onto the Plaza de la Independecia. These really come into their own as dusk falls and the lights a dozen churches and spires are lit, to magical effect.
